The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has announced the launch of two eight-month diploma programmes in programming and data science. To apply for the diploma programme, students do not need to have a background in engineering or computer science. It is open to students, working professionals, and job seekers who have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in any discipline, via any mode.

According to the institute, the programme aims to enable learners of all backgrounds to build the necessary fundamentals, enhance their knowledge, and hone their skills through extensive hands-on training. It also claims to be the only official diplomas available at IIT Madras.

Candidates must take an entry qualifier exam, and the registration deadline is November 15 on the official website, diploma.iitm.ac.in. The exam is set to take place on December 12. Applicants must take the in-person exam at an exam centre in their preferred city. Those who pass this exam will be able to enrol in the diploma programme.

To obtain a diploma in programming or data science, a student must complete eight courses. Because the content will be delivered online, the programme will provide the flexibility that working professionals and students require.

"With these diplomas, IIT Madras aims to reach the widest possible audience with the highest-quality education and training." With this goal in mind, the program's pay-as-you-go model provides significant financial flexibility. Essentially, the fee paid each term is determined by the number of courses registered for that term. In addition, IIT Madras is offering course fee waivers of up to 75% based on the learners' socioeconomic background," the institute said.

The programme is self-paced and includes live classes, hands-on activities, assignments, projects, and mini-projects to help students improve their problem-solving skills. The diplomas offer a one-of-a-kind opportunity for working professionals to upskill without taking time away from their jobs. This is an option that employers who want to upskill their employees can consider.

The courses would be delivered using a comprehensive learning delivery model that competes with classroom learning. For each subject, there are live sessions with course instructors where learners' questions are answered. The evaluation would take the form of in-person quizzes and end-of-term exams, ensuring that this programme meets the same academic rigour as an IIT Madras on-campus programme.

Prof Anil Sahasrabudhe, Chairman, All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), launched the diploma entry portal today, October 4, in the presence of Thirumala Arohi, Senior Vice President, Infosys Limited, and Prof Bhaskar Ramamurthi, Director, IIT Madras.

Prof. Bhaskar Ramamurthi, Director of IIT Madras, stated on the occasion, "The convenience of online learning combined with in-person assessments makes the programme flexible while maintaining academic rigour." We are well-equipped to handle scale and provide an enriching and engaging learning experience due to our extensive experience in the online education space."

"Education is a continuous process of learning," said Prof Sahasrabudhe. To remain competitive in today's workplace, students and working professionals will need to constantly update their knowledge and skills."
